The Ultimate Guide to San Diego: Best Food, Coffee Shops, and Nightlife Spots

What Comes to Mind When You Think of San Diego?
Tacos? Surfing? The Navy? Or maybe Ron Burgundy? For me, it’s tacos—some of the best I’ve ever had.

When I planned this trip to San Diego, it was partly to see one of my photos featured in a gallery, but also to escape Seattle’s winter chill. During my weekend here, I discovered some incredible food and drink spots that I can’t wait to share. If San Diego is on your travel list, this guide will help you explore the city’s best eats and drinks.

Best Food Spots in San Diego

Mona Lisa Italian Foods
Located just outside Little Italy, Mona Lisa is a hidden gem. Part grocery store, part restaurant, it serves one of the best meatball subs I’ve ever had—fresh meatballs, flavorful sauce, and perfectly crispy bread that won’t hurt your mouth. Their deli sandwiches are also amazing.

For those staying in an Airbnb, their Italian market stocks imports straight from Italy, perfect for whipping up your own meals.

Taquería Los Chuchys
San Diego is a taco paradise, and Taquería Los Chuchys is my go-to for birria and al pastor. I’ve been coming here for years, and it never disappoints. Their burritos are just as incredible. Whether you’re downtown or willing to go off the beaten path, this spot is worth it.

Mike Hess Brewing – Seaport Village
Mike Hess Brewing offers more than just beer. Their fish tacos are among the best in San Diego, and the stunning bay views make it an ideal spot to relax. Even if you’re not into beer, this place is a must-visit.

Top Coffee Shops in San Diego

The Tin Scoop Cafe
A cozy European-style cafe with a Studio Ghibli vibe, The Tin Scoop is a hidden gem. Their cortado is top-notch, and the danishes are out of this world. With its outdoor seating, it’s perfect for soaking up San Diego’s sunny weather.

Brickyard Coffee & Tea
Right around the corner from Tin Scoop, Brickyard has been my favorite for years. Their Spanish latte is fantastic. For the best experience, grab a Spanish latte here and a breakfast sandwich from Tin Scoop.

Tiger Café
Tiger Café introduced me to Matchata (matcha + horchata), and now I can’t live without it. This downtown spot offers great coffee, teas, and refreshers, plus a killer breakfast sandwich.

Donut Bar & Bakery
Start your morning with massive, delicious donuts at Donut Bar. While coffee isn’t their focus, the donuts—like "The Homer"—are worth every calorie.

Nightlife in San Diego: Unique Bars

Young Blood
This speakeasy is an experience like no other. With no menu, bartenders craft drinks tailored to your preferences. From smoky old-fashioneds to mezcal masterpieces, every drink is a story. Be sure to book ahead, as it’s a tough spot to get into.

A sci-fi tiki bar with a custom soundtrack and ceiling mirrors in the bathrooms? Yes, please. Mothership delivers a fully immersive experience, perfect for tiki bar lovers. Don’t forget to snag their unique soundtrack as a souvenir.
